One of the medical groups providing free health screenings was Mercy Cardiovascular Institute was doing free blood pressure checks. LaMacchia said she was thrilled to win the prize which is valued at $7,000 to $8,000. “Our winner actually entered the drawing last year at this event, so we thought it would be fun to award the prize at this year’s event,” said owner JR Weddell. The winner was Lois LaMacchia of Jackson Township. They took the raffle with them all year to various fairs and festivals, including the Great Big Home and Garden Show in Cleveland and county fairs across Northeast Ohio. The company held a year-long raffle starting with last year’s Senior Health and Wellness Day at the Jackson YMCA. One of the big events of this year’s event was the naming and awarding the winner of the JR Bath raffle for a new shower/tub remodel. Some of the new vendors we have this year include Southern Care Hospice, Canton Regency, Mata Mediterranean Grill, Home Instead Senior Care, Briar Creek Lodge and Greenview Assisted Living." “We try to offer a variety of activities and games with prizes to try to make our event just a bit different than other health fairs. “The event is open to seniors from around the area,” said Sue McFarland, senior programmer at David YMCA.
The event usually draws more than 200 local seniors who enjoy a free lunch (provided this year by Bethany Nursing Home), exercise, health screenings, local health care vendors and plenty of socialization and good times. The David YMCA in Jackson Township held its 8th annual Senior Health and Wellness Day on May 10.
